The fate of Camden’s memorials still uncertain
Camden city councilmember Angel Fuentes introduced a city-wide ordinance that would limit the amount of days makeshift memorials could be in public to 15 days. Often times after a loved one has been killed due to violence or a vehicular accident families will honor them through a roadside memorial. Fuentes’ bill aimed to regulate these memorials citing lower property values and the effect it had on the city’s youth.
The photos below were taken during a public meeting between councilmember Fuentes the family of Troy Anderson, a 15-year-old who was shot and killed in 2014. The family spoke of the pain they would have felt had they been forced to take down their memorial after 15 days — as Fuentes’ proposal would mandate.
The ordinance was later voted down by city council in the following council meeting.
